“Verity” opens at No. 1 with $32.6 million as Tom Cruise’s “Digger” stumbles

Amazon MGM’s Colleen Hoover adaptation, starring Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson, led the domestic weekend, while Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s political satire opened fifth.

The winner: Verity, Amazon MGM’s erotic thriller based on Colleen Hoover’s novel, opened to an estimated $32.6 million ($32,618,776) from 3,510 theaters, a $9,293 per-theater average, according to Sunday studio estimates reported by Boxoffice Pro and The Numbers. Boxoffice Pro said the film added $30 million from 70 international markets for a $62.6 million global launch, topping charts in 30 markets including the U.K. and Germany.

Who showed up: Audiences were 78% female, and 25- to 34-year-olds were the largest group at 38%, Boxoffice Pro reported. The film drew a “C+” CinemaScore and a 33% Rotten Tomatoes critics’ score, but the outlet called it “review-proof.” Its opening roughly matches this year’s Wuthering Heights ($32.8 million debut) and beats Hoover’s earlier 2026 adaptation Reminders of Him ($17.97 million).

The miss: Warner Bros.’ Digger, Iñárritu’s political satire starring Tom Cruise, opened fifth with an estimated $8 million from 3,321 theaters, a $2,409 average, Boxoffice Pro and The Numbers reported. Boxoffice Pro said it is Cruise’s lowest opening since 2007’s Lions for Lambs; the film drew a 51% Rotten Tomatoes score and a “C+” CinemaScore, and took in $12 million overseas for about $20 million worldwide.

The rest of the top five: Sony’s Resident Evil was second with $12.5 million (about $124.9 million total), Paramount’s Heart of the Beast third with $11 million, and A24’s Primetime fourth with about $8 million, The Numbers reported. Boxoffice Pro put the full three-day weekend at about $99 million, up 18.9% from the same weekend in 2025.

Record note: Boxoffice Pro reported that the reissue Avengers: Endgame Encore has pushed Avengers: Endgame to about $2.925 billion worldwide, just past Avatar’s $2.923 billion, making it the biggest global release of all time again.

What this means: Romance-thriller adaptations aimed at women keep proving they can open big regardless of reviews, while a costly auteur swing with a megastar shows that star power alone does not guarantee a crowd. Next weekend brings Aaron Sorkin’s The Social Reckoning and the horror film Other Mommy, per Boxoffice Pro.
