MTV VMAs return with Madonna opening, Taylor Swift making history, and Nirvana honored
The 2026 MTV Video Music Awards air tonight from Los Angeles with Snoop Dogg hosting, Madonna opening the show, Taylor Swift set for a new honor — and Nirvana receiving the Video Vanguard Award. Winners are still ahead; this is a how-to-watch and stakes preview.
When and where to watch: The 2026 MTV Video Music Awards are scheduled for Sunday, September 27, at 7:30 p.m. EDT (4:30 p.m. PDT), US Weekly reported. The show broadcasts on CBS and MTV and streams live on Paramount+ for Premium subscribers; Essential-tier viewers get it on demand the next day, according to US Weekly and a Paramount/CBS press release.
Madonna leads the nods — and opens the show: Madonna leads the nominations with 13, including Video of the Year for her “Confessions II” short film, Artist of the Year, and Song of the Year for “Bring Your Love” with Sabrina Carpenter, US Weekly reported. She is set to open the show with a medley of past and current hits, the first live VMA performance in years for the pop star, according to US Weekly’s preview coverage.
Taylor Swift’s history night: Taylor Swift will receive the inaugural MTV VMA Artist Director Honors, becoming the most awarded artist in VMA history, the Associated Press reported via The Washington Post. CBS and MTV also said her self-directed music video for the new single “Patient Zero” — starring Colin Farrell and Dakota Johnson — will world premiere during the broadcast, according to a Paramount Press Express release. Swift is nominated for 11 awards this year, the same release said.
Nirvana’s honor: The Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award goes to Nirvana, US Weekly reported. Industry coverage from Billboard and Rolling Stone likewise identified the band as this year’s Vanguard recipient.
Other performers and tributes: Scheduled performers include Gener8ion with Yung Lean, Lisa, Raye, Shaboozey, Gunna and Sienna Spiro, US Weekly reported. Tributes are planned for George Michael (Raye, Sombr and Teddy Swims) and for Dolly Parton (Kacey Musgraves), according to the same preview.
Host: Snoop Dogg hosts. In a press statement quoted by US Weekly, he called the booking a “full-circle moment,” noting MTV and the VMAs have been part of his career since early on.
What we are not calling: The show is live tonight. ReadingDlaw News is not inventing category winners, red-carpet fashion takes, or performance reviews before they happen. Check back after the broadcast for results that can be sourced.
What this means: Tonight’s stakes are cultural as much as competitive — a major Madonna return, a new directing honor that cements Swift’s VMA lead, and a Vanguard night for Nirvana — all on broadcast television and streaming.
