Tibet’s quake and Jordan’s church shooting may show how much rests on officials

A magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck Baqên County in the Nagqu region of China’s Tibet on Thursday night local time, Oct. 22, killing at least 16 people, Chinese state media said. On Friday, Oct. 23, gunmen killed seven people at a church funeral in Jordan’s Karak governorate, Jordanian officials said. Neither toll has been independently confirmed. Read together, the two stories may show how much of what is known after a deadly event rests on official word.
