Democrats’ lawsuit and a Miami ruling may test federal power over elections
Democratic Party leaders, including Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries, have sued in federal court in Washington to block the Trump administration from taking over states’ role in running elections, AP reported; the Justice Department said its actions are grounded in law. On Oct. 1, a Miami federal judge held that only states, not Congress, have authority to set voter qualifications for federal elections, in a ruling limited to that case. Together, they may test where federal power over elections stops.
