‘Avengers Endgame: Encore’ tops weekend box office with about $86 million global

Disney and Marvel’s Endgame re-release led the Sept. 25–27 weekend with an estimated $86 million worldwide, pushed the MCU past $35 billion, and teased Avengers: Doomsday.

What we know: Avengers Endgame: Encore took the No. 1 global spot over the Sept. 25–27 weekend with an estimated $86 million — about $26 million domestic and $60 million international — Disney and Variety reported. Disney called it the estimated second-highest global debut of all time for a re-release.

All-time standings: Endgame’s cumulative worldwide gross now stands at about $2.885 billion, leaving it roughly $39 million behind Avatar for the all-time No. 1 slot, Disney said. Marvel Studios’ franchise total reached about $35.075 billion across 38 films; Variety put the MCU near $35.07 billion and noted Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s $2.2 billion summer haul.

Doomsday teaser: The encore presentation included an exclusive first look at Avengers: Doomsday, due in theaters Dec. 18. Anthony and Joe Russo return as directors. Robert Downey Jr. appears as Doctor Doom, not Iron Man, Disney said.

Premium screens: The re-release opened in more than 3,000 theaters, including more than 1,300 Infinity Vision screens — Disney’s premium large-format certification — which accounted for about 52 percent of the opening-weekend take, Disney reported.

What else opened: Brad Pitt’s The Heart of the Beast opened to about $50.1 million globally ($20 million North America; $30.1 million from 63 international markets), Variety reported, finishing behind the Endgame encore on the weekend charts.

What this means: Marvel is using a record-scale re-release and a Doomsday peek to keep Endgame’s audience in theaters months before the next Avengers film — and the weekend haul nudged the studio’s franchise total past another historic round number.
